Analysis of LINE's Rules and Restrictions

LINE's monthly active user count in Taiwan has once again reached a new high, currently hitting 21 million. This figure shows that LINE has deeply integrated into people's daily lives in Taiwan, playing a crucial role in communication, payments, entertainment, and work. The success of LINE lies in its high penetration rate in Taiwan. Although Japan has a higher total number of LINE users at 92 million, Taiwan's LINE usage density is even higher. This means that in Taiwan, 9 out of 10 people use LINE, making it unique on a global scale (Business of Apps). This high usage rate of LINE in Taiwan drives its leading position in various functionalities. LINE is not just a communication tool; it has become a multifunctional lifestyle platform, fully integrated into the daily lives of Taiwanese users.

While LINE holds immense potential as a marketing tool, it is crucial to understand its rules and restrictions before using LINE for marketing activities. This article summarizes some of the "potential" rules and restrictions that our technical team has discovered through ongoing testing and experimentation. Please note that these rules are not fixed and may be adjusted by LINE at any time, so it is essential to stay updated.

As Peter Drucker said, "If you can't measure it, you can't manage it." Understanding and complying with platform rules is key to success in LINE marketing. LINE has established a set of rules when designing its marketing platform to ensure a balance between user experience and business interests. These rules include, but are not limited to, limits on message sending frequency, content review mechanisms, and privacy protection requirements.

With a monthly active user count of 21 million in Taiwan, this data demonstrates LINE's tremendous influence in the Taiwanese market, making it an ideal platform for marketing activities. However, to ensure the effectiveness and compliance of marketing activities, marketers need to deeply understand LINE's terms of use and policies. Specifically, LINE has strict content review for advertisements to protect users from spam.

Additionally, LINE limits the sending frequency of marketing messages to avoid excessive disturbance to users. For example, according to LINE's regulations, there is a limit on the number of advertising messages that can be sent per account each day, and exceeding this limit may lead to temporary account suspension. These restrictive measures help maintain user goodwill and the overall health of the platform.

When using LINE for marketing activities, it is crucial to understand and comply with these rules and restrictions. As Albert Einstein stated, "Knowledge is limited, while imagination embraces the entire world." Being well-prepared and informed about LINE's rules can make your marketing activities more efficient and successful. LINE has enormous potential as a marketing tool, but its rules and restrictions require marketers to be thoroughly understood and adhered to. Only then can the marketing value of the LINE platform be fully realized, leading to better marketing results.

General Rules

When LINE's restrictions are triggered (when LINE believes your behavior exceeds normal limits), the use of certain features on that account within the LINE software will be suspended.

When your account is temporarily restricted by LINE, the time to lift the restriction will be extended if you trigger it again, for example, if you exceed the regulated number of friends added but continue to search for friends, LINE will continue to extend your restriction period.

When LINE pops up a message window warning you that you are exceeding normal limits, if you do not stop the actions causing the continuous triggering of LINE's rules, your account may be permanently restricted from certain functions or suspended by LINE. When you can no longer log in, it means your account has been suspended.

Search Restrictions

If you continuously search for friends and make about 4 errors, this often happens when the LINE ID or mobile phone number you are trying to search is not registered with LINE, or the person with that account has enabled the "Allow ID to add friends" option in LINE's privacy settings. LINE will display the message "You have exceeded the number of allowable search attempts," and you will be unable to continue searching for friends. The search function will be restricted for about 1 hour, meaning you cannot search for any friends during that time; the restriction time will be extended if triggered again.

Within one day, if you make more than about 50 incorrect searches, even if you input the correct ID, you will still be unable to search. Violating this once may lead to a temporary block, and the search function will be locked for about 1 hour; if you violate it more than twice, you will be temporarily blocked, and the search function will be locked for about 1 day.

From the same IP address, you can only search for about 49 friends within 1 hour.

[Specific Case] When you continuously add about 300 friends, you "may" be restricted from searching for friends; this is a temporary block and will be lifted after about 7 days.

Friend Adding Restrictions

When you continuously or intermittently add about the 10th friend within one hour, a numeric verification code will appear. To avoid the verification code, limit the number of friends added to no more than 9 within one hour. In theory, a single account can add about 216 friends in one day.

Personal Information Modifications

[Specific Case] Modifying the name or status message of a LINE account too frequently or having too long status message text may "potentially" restrict the ability to search for friends.

This is a temporary block, and in principle, it can be lifted after about 7 days, but if there are multiple failures, the time to lift the restriction may accumulate.

When logging into the computer version, the message appears: "You have been restricted from logging in due to too many failed login attempts from the same IP address."

This is a temporary block, and in principle, it can be lifted after about 1 hour, but if there are multiple failures, the time to lift the restriction may accumulate.

LINE Blacklist

When an account is blocked by LINE, the mobile number, mobile IMEI code, and email address used to apply for the LINE account will be blacklisted by LINE, making it impossible to apply for a LINE account using these forever.

LINE Forwarding

LINE allows a maximum of about 20 messages to be forwarded, while the mobile version allows forwarding to a maximum of about 10 friends, and the computer version can only forward to one friend.

LINE Groups

When you are in a LINE group and cancel invitations to those not in the group, if you cancel to a certain number of people (not a fixed value) within 1 hour, your account will automatically be blocked by LINE, and the computer version of LINE will automatically log out, making it impossible to log in again. This is a temporary block and can be lifted after about 24 hours.

LINE Official Accounts

When sending messages from LINE Official Accounts, if you send more than about 18 messages in one minute, a single warning will appear, but you can continue sending. However, if you send more than about 200 messages within 15 minutes, the LINE Official Account may temporarily restrict that account from continuing to send messages, requiring you to wait about 1 hour before you can continue sending messages. Other operators of the LINE Official Account will not be affected.

If you send too many messages, you will receive the message: "Due to reaching the daily limit of messages that can be sent, you cannot send messages. This restriction will be lifted in a maximum of 24 hours. However, you can reply to messages sent to users within the last 7 days." At this point, the sending function of the account will be blocked for a day, but you can still reply to messages sent within the last 7 days.

There is a limit on the number of advertising messages that can be sent per account each day; exceeding this limit may lead to temporary account suspension.

Messages sent in bulk must not contain links or information pointing to spam websites.

Content may be subject to review by LINE, and must not contain violent or sexually explicit expressions, discriminatory expressions, or any content that induces or encourages suicide, self-harm, drug abuse, or other inappropriate content.
